what is reflective parenting?
Reflective parenting is an approach where parents consider both their own and their child’s thoughts and feelings to better understand their child’s inner life.
Perhaps your child has been displaying challenging behaviour recently, or maybe you have been really struggling to understand what is going on inside their mind. During sessions we will use examples of recent challenges such as arguments, disagreements, or moments where it was hard to understand why your child was so upset.
By thinking through these challenges at home, reflective parenting sessions help you pause before reacting. We work together to help you understand why your child may be acting this way. It’s about noticing your own feelings and when your child’s behaviour is stirring up old wounds or fears. It helps you to respond with curiosity instead of criticism.
My professional stance is that you are the expert on your own child. However, having a reflective space with a Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist helps you break cycles of conflict or misunderstanding and strengthen your connection with your child, even during tough phases. By reaching out for support with your parenting, you are working to model emotional resilience, because your children learn from how you cope.
